A certificate that says “20% caffeine” is useful only when the sampling, method and batch identity are credible. High-performance liquid chromatography—HPLC—is widely used to separate and quantify caffeine in guarana raw materials and finished products.
What the laboratory actually measures
The analyst prepares a known quantity of sample in a suitable solvent, extracts the caffeine and filters the solution. The instrument separates compounds as they pass through a chromatography column. Caffeine is identified by retention behavior and quantified against a reference standard using peak response.
Raw material and finished pouch answer different questions
A raw-material assay confirms whether the incoming extract meets its specification. It does not prove that every pouch contains the intended dose. Finished-pouch testing also captures dispensing, blend-uniformity and fill-weight variation. A robust program uses both.
Sampling is often the weak point
One convenient pouch from the top of a case is not necessarily representative. Sampling plans should cover locations across a batch and define whether pouches are tested individually or as a composite. Individual testing is especially valuable during process validation because averages can hide high and low units.
Method suitability matters
Guarana contains caffeine alongside polyphenols and other compounds. The method must demonstrate that the caffeine peak is adequately separated and that the matrix does not bias recovery. Accuracy, precision, linearity, specificity and solution stability are among the normal validation considerations.
What buyers should request
Ask for the batch number, specification, numerical result, method identification, testing date and authorized release. For finished goods, confirm that the result is expressed per pouch—not merely per gram of fill. A glossy “HPLC tested” badge without traceable data is not a substitute for a certificate tied to the shipment.
